when i saw this in the thumbnail, i thought those were tombstones...maybe they are in a different sort of way.

I think it is the curious focal point that makes this baby pop. For this kind of composition, I expect almost no depth of field but this has depth and still manages to hold on to that matt flat appearance. It's almost like one of those gestalt "eye-twisters"
