San Telmo is famous for its flea market above anything else. The roots of the flea market go back to the 1879s, when yellow fever hit Buenos Aires, causing an instant exodus of middle class families to suburban areas with much less crowding. Poorer families from La Boca and other areas squatted in the newly-vacated houses of San Telmo. When the old families came back, the new families were kind enough to sell them back their possessions, no doubt at market prices. Today, many of the items found at San Telmo's flea antique market are likely items that were pawned by middle class families who lost their savings in the currency devaluation of 2001. At the very least, there are many interesting relics to see. Unfortunately, all the camera gear was overpriced.
nice!
