Much of the housing, and subsequent commercial spaces in San Telmo are comprised of houses that face into an interior courtyard. The houses are typically long, and open onto either the ground level, or in some, to a balcony above it. As the city developed, these also became ideal settings for stores.
Interesting - nothing like that here in the Dirty South, although it would likely work well. I like the variety of textures in the shot, the paint is peeling in so many different ways.

reminds me of some of the tourist traps in cuba, set out just like this. it's actually a traditional moorish design to have a main entrance leading into a courtyard with planting and (usually) a water feature; the spanish picked up the habit from their 700 year association with their moorish rulers.
