Hello Oak Street: The Demolition of Regent Park

February 13, 2006 marked the beginning of the redevelopment of Regent Park. Toronto's oldest and most notorious social housing project is to be replaced in phases over the next 10-12 years by a new neighbourhood that is comprised of mixed housing and reintegrated physically with the rest of the city, if all goes according to plan.

A worker strips away framing as he prepares to remove windows.

Piles of debris are quickly building. It also appears that the debris is being sorted by type, suggesting that literally and figuratively, Regent Park may be recycled.

With the demolition of these buildings, much will be erased, including what appears to be a mural in a child's bedroom.
